EXETER

THE MAYOR having noticed the appearance of an ANONYMOUS HAND-BILL, calling for an Illumination on Thursday Evening next, and conceiving that the same may not be generally aproved of, deems it necessary to publicly state, that he shall consider it his duty to take every precaution for preventing any Illegal Attempt which might be made TO ENFORCE IT, and to protect all those Inhabitants who may not feel disposed to illuminate; with this view, the Civil Power will be in readiness to act as occasion shall require; and the Mayor invites all well-disposed Citizens to unite with him in preserving the peace of the City.

ROBERT R. SANDERS, Mayor.

Note:
Elsewhere in this issue there is a detailed account of the disturbances in London during the "illuminations" which celebrated the collapse of the trial in the House of Lords of Queen Caroline, a trial that had been brought by the King in an attempt to gain a divorce. The next week's issue (Trewman's Exeter Flying Post, Thursday, November 23, 1820; Issue 2880) contained the following article:

ILLUMINATION.- We mentioned in our last, that the friends of the Queen were making preparations to express their joy, on the result of her Majesty's trial, by an illumination, and which took place accordingly, on Thursday evening. Public opinion was greatly divided on the occasion; in the Fore-street, which numbers 271 houses, 138 were lighted up, and 133 were in total darkness; in South -street, Magdalen-street, Holloway, North-street, and the back streets and lanes, the Illuminations were more general; a number of Transparencies were exhibited, and Crowns, Stars, and various appropriate Motto's, shone brightly in Lamps; but the dwellings of the higher ranks presented a very different appearance, for through the whole extent of the houses in Southernhay-place three only had lights - in Dix's-field one only - whilst every house in Bedford Circus, Barnfield Crescent, Collaton Crescent, and Summerland Place, was in total darkness;- the same was observable at the Devon and Exeter Institution, and at the new Subscription Rooms; nor at either of the principal Inns was a light shewn. There was a bonfire, and an abundant display of fire-works, in the Cathedral-yard, which served to brighten the gloom that otherwise prevailed in that quarter.- A great concourse of people continued to parade the streets for several hours in the most peaceable and orderly manner; had a contrary spirit shewn itself, our active Chief-Magistrate was provided with ample means to suppress it, and to which wise precaution may principally be attributed the quiet of the evening.
