Memoir of the Life and Writings of the Late Rev Henry Tanner of Exeter with a Selection of his Writings. 2nd Edition (Corrected),
by
Rev Robert Hawker DD
London: J D Dewick, Barbican; Printed for T Williams, Stationer's Court. illus, xii, 324 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Riverside Baptist Church in Exeter was built by Henry Tanner in 1769 and known as Tanner's Tabernacle. It is, with Hawker's book, his legacy. Tanner was an Exeter man, born in St Sidwell's in 1718, who became convinced in 1744 of his need for salvation, through the preaching of George Whitfield. The book contains an account of his travels through Devon, mentioning, for example, visits to Plymouth, Brent, Ashburton, Exwick and even Bovey Heathfield. But Tanner is a man totally absorbed with interpreting the scriptures and with his own salvation, so travels alone with his personal "Redeemer". Only 10 people are mentioned by name in the first 100 pages, and only three people in the second 100 pages. The reader is left feeling that self-absorbed Tanner might not have been the easiest of traveling companions. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the Bodleian Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
