Maister Thomas Hunt Late Mayor of this Citie of Excester
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 32, (1900), pp. 460-490.
by
A.R. Hunt
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, read at the Association's 1900 Totnes meeting was written in response to Sir John Bowring's request that "more be done (by Association members) to "preserve the histories of the illustrious obscure". Thomas Hunt as Mayor of Exeter in 1537, together with his portreeves, controlled the city - everything from the locking of the city gates at night, the regulation of trades such as brewing and baking, and the control of the markets, falling under his authority. Exeter has the oldest 'Right Worshipful' Mayoralty in England after the City of London and Winchester, giving Exeter's Mayor a head position in all parades and ceremonial occasions. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
