Life of Joanna Southcott

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 44 (1912) pp. 732-756.

by

Charles Lane

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper, read at the Association's July 1912 Exeter meeting by R Pearse Chope, BA, on behalf of its author, deals with the life and work of Joanna Southcott (or Southcote) (April 1750 - 27 December 1814), who was a self-described religious prophetess. She was born at Taleford, and raised in the village of Gittisham. At the age of 64 she affirmed that she was pregnant and would be delivered of the new Messiah, the Shiloh of Genesis 49:10. The date of 19 October 1814 was that fixed for the birth, but Shiloh failed to appear. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
