Bibliography of Joanna Southcott
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 44 (1912) pp. 757-809.
by
Charles Lane
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, presented at the Association's July 1912 Exeter meeting by R Pearse Chope, BA, on behalf of its author, provides an extensive annotated bibliography on the life and works of Joanna Southcott, as well as commentaries from her supporters and detractors. She is described in the Oxford Dictionary of English History as "a religious fanatic, of Devon farming stock", and was originally in domestic service in Exeter. Called to methodism (1791), she soon had religious experiences and started 'sealing' her writings. She visited Bristol (1798), published The Strange Effects of Faith (1801), and moved to London (1802). She claimed to be 'the Lamb's wife' (Rev. 12) who would give birth to 'the second Christ' in 1814; instead she died of brain disease. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
