An Account of the Hospitium de le Egle, Some Ancient Chapels in the Close, and Some Persons Connected Therewith

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 44 (1912) pp. 480-511.

by

Ethel Lega-Weekes

Prepared by Michael Steer

"Hospitium de le Egle", was the medieval mansion of Robert Wilford. It was first mentioned in 1420. The Wilford family were wealthy importers of woad throughout the 13 and 1400s, and both Robert Wilford and William Wilford were mayors of Exeter. The meaning of "Hospitium" is unclear. Possibly the house provided private hospitality and lodgings. The Wilfords were among the wealthiest of Exeter's late-medieval citizens and with their political and economic interests perhaps enjoyed the status of accommodating significant visitors to the city. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held at the Princeton University Library and is available from the Internet Archive.
