Exeter: Printed for W. Spreat, Bookseller, (1824) 134pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
William Spreat was a bookseller. He is recorded as residing at Premier Place, Mount Radford in 1842, with business premises at 263 High Street from 1841. His son William's widow Jane succeeded him on his death in 1847. His son was a publisher as well as a skilled lithographer, and is responsible for some 200 Devon scenes. The elder Spreat's several publications were mostly on religious topics as well as this informative early guide to his native city. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the New York Public Library and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
