The early history of the principal manors in Exminster Hundred

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 47, (1915) pp. 210-234.

by

Rev Oswald J. Reichel

Prepared by Michael Steer

King Alfred bequeathed the manor of Exminster to his younger son. At the time of the Domesday survey it was held by William Chievre or Capra. In Henry II's reign, it belonged to Earl Richard, afterwards King, who gave it to William Brewer. It afterwards passed to the Courtenay family, Earls of Devonshire, with a magnificent mansion in which Archbishop Courtenay and his brother Sir Peter are said to have been born. This comprehensive paper presents detailed information on the several ancient manors within the Hundred. The author also provides a comprehensive tabular summary and an index to his papers on Exminster Hundred that appear in this issue of the Transactions, pp.234-248. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
