Sir Henry Rosewell: A Devon worthy: His ancestry and history

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol 20, 1888, pp. 113-22.

by

Francis B. James

Prepared by Michael Steer

Sir Henry Rosewell (1590-1656) of Forde Abbey, Devon, was a puritan and supporter of the New World colonies. He had family connections with those involved in both the Dorchester and Massachusetts Bay companies but it is doubtful whether he took an active part in either venture. He was High Sheriff of Devon in 1629 and Justice of the Peace (listed 1630, 1647 and 1653). As a Puritan he was brought before the Court of High Commission in 1634 for holding a private chapel at Forde Abbey. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
