Fores's guide to the foxhounds and staghounds of England;

to which are added, the otter-hounds and harriers of several counties

by

Gêlert (pseud.)

London, Messrs Fores (1849), 41 Piacadilly. Printed: Harrison & Sons. pp. v, 163.

Prepared by Michael Steer

Fox hunting has taken place in the UK for almost 700 years. The first accurately recorded fox hunt -- during which a farmer in Norfolk used his dogs to chase down a fox suspected of killing some of his livestock -- was in 1534. There are references to hunting foxes in England dating as far back as AD43. The author's name, a pseudonym derives from the legend of Gelert, Prince Llewellyn's faithful hunting dog. The book is a compendium, presented by county, of most of the Hunts in England and Wales. This index presents only those surnames found in the sections on Devonshire. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
