Ancient Camps, Earthworks and Fortifications in Devon

by

George Vere Irving Esq, FSA, Scot, VP

In British Archaeological Association. Collectanea Archaeologica (1843). Vol II, Part I

London: Longman, Green, Longman & Roberts, pp. 18-29.

Prepared by Michael Steer

Irving, George Vere (1815-1869), lawyer and antiquary, born in 1815, was only son of Alexander Irving of Newton, Lanarkshire, afterwards a Scottish judge with the title of Lord Newton. Irving was F.S.A. Scot. and vice-president of the British Archaeological Association. He also contributed frequently to 'Notes and Queries'. The paper is esentially an invaluable catalogue of ancient sites, the majority mentioned in Lysons, Camden, Polwhele and Grose. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the Bodleian Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
