Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 8 (1876), pp. 117-147.

Thomas Fairfax was eldest son of Ferdinando, Lord Fairfax. He studied at St John's College, Cambridge, and Gray's Inn (1626-28), volunteering to join Vere's expedition to fight for the Protestant cause in the Netherlands. In 1639 he commanded a troop of dragoons against the Scots in the First Bishops' War. In the Second Bishops' War the army was routed at the battle of Newburn. Fairfax fled with the rest of the defeated army but was nevertheless knighted for his services in January 1641. This paper, presented at the Association's July 1876 Ashburton meeting treats with his campaigns in the West of England and particularly in Devon. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
