On the Ornithology of the South of Devon
by
Edward Moore
From the Transactions of the Plymouth Institution. Plymouth: Rowe, 9 Whimple Street (1830). 67pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The present day benevolent attitude to birds is a comparatively recent phenomenon, since well into the 20th century the persecution of birds knew no bounds. This persecution, and the depredations of egg collectors continued unabated for 150 years or more and had become a generally accepted social practice. Even the few individuals like Moore and those mentioned in this book, who brought a scientific approach to the study of birds thought nothing of using the gun to further their work in the early days of ornithology. Many of the birds (some of them designated rare) that are classified and catalogued in Moore's text had been shot by contributor collectors (many of whom were clergymen) and were display specimens in collection glass cases. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the Bodleian Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
