The History of Teetotalism in Devonshire

by

W. Hunt

Devonport & London, (1841) iii + 138 pp.

Prepared by Michael Steer

Hunt's book is a rather polemical account of the early years following the founding of the first Total Abstinence Society at Preston, Lancashire, in 1833. In the West Country, there were a number of organisations including the County of Devon Temperance League and the West of England Temperance Association; a number of issues of the latter's official magazine, the Western Temperance Herald, are online in full (see 1859, 1867 and 1868). Historically, Devon had a particular alcohol-related malady, "Devonshire colic": agonising stomach pain associated with cider-drinking. Its cause was long assumed to be due simply to immoderate drinking until Sir George Baker investigated in 1767 and discovered the cause to be lead poisoning, either from the use of soldered vessels in cider-making or deliberate adulteration with lead. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Bodleian Library collection that can be downloaded from https://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
