Late of Hockworthy, now in the debtors ward in St Thomas, born in Dunkeswell, was never an apprentice - when he was 16 or 17 went as a servant to Mr Channon in Hemyock for 9 months and then Mr Browne for nearly a year, both by the week, returned to his father. In 1827 took a cottage and garden in Hemyock at £1 from Mr Murch, after a year he took some land at £13, in 1829 took an estate in Hockworthy, at £29 from Mr Webster and did carpentry work for him in lieu of part of the rent, about five months ago all his effects in Hockworthy were seized for rent arrears
