Huntsham Court Game Book - Comments on Some Names

by

David Wall

The handwriting of Charles and to a lesser extent Gilbert is difficult to read. A '?' after the name denotes that the spelling is unsure. Initials of shooters are used in places instead of the full name and if these can be readily interpreted the full name is given. There are several instances of single names that could be either a given name or surname, for example Duncan, Donald. Only if the full name of this person cannot be identified is the single name listed.

Acland, A.; Acland Alfred; Acland, Arthur. Either Alfred or Arthur could be the A. Acland of 1897-1908.

Acland, Bevill? An unusual name that may be incorrectly spelled.

Acland, Charlie. The use of the diminutive perhaps indicates he was a friend of Gilbert Troyte? Disappeared in Gilbert's time after 1938.

Acland, Ted. Only appeared in 1940-1941.

Acland, Robin. Only appeared in 1908. As with all these Aclands who joined the shoots it is not known how they relate to the Troyte family.

Albert. It seems likely that this is a given name and that he is probably a friend of Gilbert Troyte.

Aldridge, Frank. Took over from Cuthbert Hayes as Keeper for Gilbert for 13 years.

Amory, Jack. Only mentioned twice between 1922 and 1939. What connection did he have with the Tiverton Amorys?

Anstey; Anstey, Major T.; Anstey, Michael; Anstey Patrick. The last three shoot 1964-66 and are probably of the same family. They are possibly related to Anstey of 1904-06.

Archdale. A frequent shooter with Gilbert Troyte from 1939-1947.

Baker, K. The two K. Bakers may be the same but there are more than 20 years between their appearance.

Baker, Dr; Baker T. May be the same.

Batson; Batson, Captain. May be the same.

Bazeley, E. A.; Bazeley, H. M.; Bazeley, William. Probably the same family.

Bilson. This name appears regularly over a 20-year period, spelled in different ways and sometimes as 'Reeve Bilson'. There may be two persons involved.

Carter, J. W.; Carter, S.; Carter, W. G. May be related and to an earlier generation Carter, M.

Chapman, Edmund; Chapman, G.; Chapman, M. Probably related.

Courtenay, Lord. It is not clear whether he is also Commander.

Cruddas, Junior; Cruddas, Rev. G.; Cruddas, Rev. J., Cruddas, W. J. George Cruddas was the vicar at Huntsham and 'junior' may have been his son. Were the other two related or misspellings?

Day, G.; Day, J. Appear at the same time and probably related.

Edgell. Appeared in shoots with Gilbert Troyte from 1928-46: one of the longest term participants.

Fellows, Herbert; Fellows, Captain; Fellows, E.; Fellows T. The Captain could be either E. or T. Fellows as he appears in the same period

Gas. This curious name is written consistently but could be an abbreviation.

Gould, Dick; Gould Bob. The brothers were friends of the Troyte family and visited during school holidays.

Hart, Frank; Hart, Nick; Hart, S.; Hart, W. These are probably members of the same Hart family and may have been friends of Hugh Troyte. Frank appears over a 32 year period that spans Gilbert Troyte's time.

Hayes, Cuthbert. Keeper for 28 years.

Hillyard, A.; Hillyard, H.; Hillyard, Major G.; Hillyard, Reverend; Hillyard, T. Their appearance between 1888-1922 indicates a probable family relationship. The reverend could have been any of them.

Hudson, Reverend Arthur. R. Vicar of Huntsham.

Hun? This unusual name appears from 1954-61 but because of Gilbert Troyte's difficult handwriting it is never clear. Could it be an abbreviation?

May; May, A.; May, H. A. and H. May could be the sons of May.

Mir?, Colonel. Another unusual name, difficult to read.

New. No initials given but appears over a 39 year period spanning Hugh and Gilbert's times. Possibly a local farmer?

Nicholas, K. Farmed at Stallengethorne, Staplecross.
