Kingsbridge and its Surroundings
by
Sarah Prideaux Fox
Plymouth : Printed for the compiler by G.P. Friend (1874). illus. 272pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Sarah Prideaux Fox (1813-1885) was author of a number of local histories and books written for Devon's emerging tourism industry. These books are now severally described as "scarce antiquarian". Her books include; Kingsbridge and its surrounds (1874), as well as History of Kingsbridge, Salcombe and its neighbours (1878). The Prideaux and Fox families were Westcountry minor gentry, connected by marriage to the Crocker-Bulteel families. This book followed the author's Kingsbridge Estuary with Rambles in the Neighbourhood (1864). It appears to be a re-worked and retitled version, with much of its material culled from Polwhele, Prince, Risdon, Pole and others, including Hawkins, History of Kingsbridge (1819). The photographs that decorate the text were taken by the author's brother. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the Harvard University Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
