"AXMINSTER HUNDRED, one of the thirty-three hundreds of the county of Devon, southern division, bounded on the N. by Somersetshire, on the E. by Dorsetshire, on the S. by the English Channel, and on the W. by Hemyock and Colyton hundreds. It contains the following parishes:-Axminster, Axmouth, Combs-Pyne, Comb,-Raleigh, Honiton, Kilmington, Luppitt, Membury, Musbury, Roosdown, Thorncombe Uplyme, Upottery, and Yarcombe. The hundred extends over an area of 61,930 acres."

"BAMPTON HUNDRED, one of the thirty-three hundreds or subdivisions of the county of Devon, situated in the north-eastern part of the county, and bounded on the N. and E. by Somersetshire, on the S. by the hundred of Halberton, and on the W. by the hundreds of Witheridge and Tiverton. It contains the parishes of Bampton or Bathampton, Burlescombe, Clayhanger, Hockworthy, Holcombe-Rogus, Morebath, and Uffculme. The area of the hundred is about 29,430 acres."

"BLACK-TORRINGTON HUNDRED, one of the 33 hundreds or subdivisions of the county of Devon, situated in the west division of the county, and bounded on the N. by the hundreds of Hartland and Shebbear, on the E. by the hundreds of Winkley, North Tawton, and Wonford; on the S. by the hundred of Litton, and on the W. by the county of Cornwall. It contains the following parishes: Abbots-Bickington, Ashbury, Ashwater, Beaworthy, Belstone, Black-Torrington, Bradford, Bradworthy, Broadwood-Kelly, Clawton, Cookbury, Exbourne, St. Giles-on-the-Heath, Halwell, Hatherleigh, High-Hampton, Hollacombe, Holsworthy, Honeychurch, Inwardleigh, Jacobstowe, Luffnicott, Milton Damerel, Monk-Okehampton, Northlew, Pancrasweek, North Petherwin, West Putford, Pyworthy, Sampford-Courtney, Sutcombe, Tetcott, Thornbury, and Werrington, with parts of Boyton, Bridgerule, and Okehampton. This hundred comprises an area of about 141,600 acres."

"BRAUNTON HUNDRED, one of the 33 hundreds or subdivisions of the county of Devon, situated in the northern parliamentary division of the county, and bounded on the N. and W. by the Bristol Channel, on the E. by the hundred of Sherwill, and on the S. by the hundreds of South Molton and Fremington. It contains the parishes of Ashford, Barnstaple, Berrynarbor, Bittadon, Bratton-Fleming, Braunton, East Buckland, West Buckland, Combo Martin, East Down, West Down, Filleigh, Georgeham, Goodleigh, Heanton-Punchardon, Ilfracombe, Kentisbury, Marwood, Morthoe, Pilton, and Trentishoe. The hundred extends over an area of about 68,830 acres."

"CLISTON, a hundred in the east portion of the county of Devon, contains the parishes of Clist-Hydon, Broad Clist, Clist St. Lawrence, Butterleigh and Whimple, comprising 19,260 acres."

"COLERIDGE, a hundred in the southern portion of the county of Devon, contains the boroughs of Dartmouth and Totnes, and the parishes of Ashprington, Blackawton, Charleton, Chivelstone, Cornworthy, Dittisham, Dodbrooke, Halwell, Harberton, St. Petrox, South Pool, East Portlemouth, St. Saviour, Sherford, Slapton, Stokefleming, Townstall, and part of Loddiswell, comprising 50, 090 acres."

"COLYTON, a hundred in the eastern portion of the county of Devon; contains the parishes of Colyton, Cotleigh, North and South Leigh, Farway, Offwell, Shute, Branscombe, Seaton, Widworthy, and Monkton; comprising 27,410 acres."

"CREDITON, a hundred in the middle division of the county of Devon, contains the parishes of Crediton, Kennerleigh, Bishop's Morchard, Colebrook, Sandford, and Newton St. Cyres comprising 34,160 acres."

"CULME, a river in the county of Devon, rises in the Blackdown Hills, and runs 25 miles to the river Ex, near Exeter. It is a hunt for the East Devon otter-hounds."

"DART RIVER, rises in Dartmoor Forest, at Cranmeer, in the county of Devon, and runs 30 miles S.E. to the sea at Dartmouth. It is so called from its swiftness, and has on its banks some fine scenery."

"DEER, a river in the county of Devon. It rises near Holsworthv and runs to the Bude canal."

"EAST BUDLEIGH HUNDRED, one of the 33 hundreds or subdivisions of the county of Devon, situated in the southern parliamentary division of the county, and bounded on the N. by the hundreds of Cliston, Hemyock, and Ottery St. Mary, on the E. by the hundreds of Colyton and Axminster, on the S. by the English Channel, and on the W. by the hundreds of Wonford and Exminster. It contains the parishes of Aylesbeare, Bicton, East Budleigh, Clist St. George, Clist Honiton, Clist St. Mary, Colyton-Rawleigh, Farringdon, Gittisham, Harpford, Littleham, Lympstone, Otterton, Rockbear, Salcombe-Regis, Sidbury, Sidmouth, Venn Ottery, Withycombe-Rawleigh, and Woodbury, with the town of Exmouth. The hundred covers an area of about 50,300 acres.

"ERMINGTON HUNDRED, one of the twenty subdivisions of Devonshire, situated in the southern part of the county, and bounded on the N. by the hundred of Tavistock, on the E. by the hundred of Stanborough, on the S. by the English Channel., and on the W. by the hundred of Midland Rodborough. It contains the parishes of Aveton-Gifford, Bigbury, Cornwood, Ermington, Harford, Holbeton, Kingston, Modbury, Newton-Ferrers, Ringmore, and Ugborough, comprising an area of about 51,000 acres."

"EXE, a river rising in Exmoor Forest on the borders of counties Somerset and Devon. It was anciently called the Isca or Isaca, and after passing Exeter, falls into the Channel by a wide mouth at Exmouth Bar."

"OKEMENT, (or Ock), a river of the county of Devon, rises in Cranmere Pool, in Dartmoor, and falls into the river Torridge near Hatherleigh.

"OTTER, a river of the county of Devon, rises under Black Down, and after a course of 23 miles falls into the English Channel at Otterton. The East Devon Otter hounds hunt on its bank."

"PLYM, a small river of the county of Devon, rises near Sheepstor in Dartmoor, and falls into the Channel at Plymouth Sound."

"PLYMPTON, a hundred in the county of Devon, contains the parishes of Brixton, Plympton St. Mary and Earls Plymstock, Revelstoke, Shaugh-Prior, Wembury, and Yealmpton, comprising an area of 32,230 acres."

"ROBOROUGH, a hundred in the county of Devon, contains the borough of Plymouth, and the parishes of Beer-Ferris, Bickleigh, Buckland-Monachorum, St. Budeaux, Egg-Buckland, Meavy, Sampford-Spiney, Sheepstor, Tamerton - Foliott, St. Peter Tavy, Walkhampton, Whitchurch, and parts of St. Andrew, Charles-the-Martyr, and Maker; comprising an area of 57,870 acres."

"ROUGEMONT, in the extra-parochial place of Castel Yard, it was the palace of the West Saxon kings at Exeter, county Devon. It has remains of the old walls and towers of the ancient castle, and is the place where the sessions court is now held at Exeter."

"STANBOROUGH, a hundred in the county of Devon, contains the parishes of East Allington, West Allington, South Brent, Buckfastleigh, Churchstow, Dartington, Dean Prior, Diptford, Holne, North Huish, South Huish, Kingsbridge, Malborough, South Milton, Moreleigh, Rattery, Thurlestone, Woodleigh, and part of Loddiswell, comprising an area of 61,870 acres."

"START POINT, a headland, with an intermitting light, in the English Channel, on the coast of county Devon, at the end of Start Bay, about 8 miles S.W. of Dartmouth. Also a headland, with a revolving light, at the north-eastern corner of Sandy, Orkney Islands."

"TAMAR, a river of counties Cornwall and Devon, rises near Wooley, in Cornwall, and after receiving the tributary waters of the Attery, Lyd, Tavy, and Lynner, forms Hamoaze Harbour, at the head of Plymouth Sound, and nearly opposite Devonport Dockyard."

"TAVISTOCK, a hundred in the county of Devon, contains the parishes of Brent-Tor, Milton Abbots, and Tavistock, comprising an area of 19,790 acres."

"WEST BUDLEIGH HUNDRED, one of the 33 hundreds or subdivisions of the county of Devon, situated in the northern parliamentary division of the county, and bounded on the N. by the hundred of Witheridge, on the E. by the hundred of Hayridge, and on the S. and W. by the hundred of Crediton. It comprises the parishes of Cheriton-Fitzpaine, Poughill, Shobrooke, Stockleigh-English, Stockleigh-Pomeroy, Upton-Hellions, and Washfield. It has an area of about 16,900 acres.
