Transactions of the Plymouth Institution and Devon and Cornwall Natural History Society, 1861-2

PRESENTED IN FOUR SECTIONS

Isaiah W N Keys, 52 Bedford Street, Plymouth (1862) 190 pp.

Index prepared by Michael Steer

The Plymouth Institution for the promotion of Science, Literature and the Liberal Arts was formed in 1812 by Mr Henry Woollcombe. Its publications show that it was named Plymouth Institution as early as 1830. Originally the members met in each other's houses. When they outgrew this facility they met in a room in Woolster Street and later in a committee-room of the Public Library. Finally they met in the Fine Art Gallery in Frankfort Street. In 1851 the Institution amalgamated with the Devon and Cornwall Natural History Society. The old Athen¾um was destroyed on April 21st 1941 during the Blitz of Plymouth. The ruins remained until after the end of the Second World War. It was finally demolished in 1959. Among the celebrated names appearing as members are found; William Froude, the naval architect, originator of the 'Froude Number', W. Pengelly the geologist and champion of Darwin, and E Stanley Gibbons the philatelist. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Bodleian collection that can be downloaded from https://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
