The Land family of Woodbeare Court, Plymtree

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 23, 1891, pp. 215-224.

by

A. Mozeley

Prepared by Michael Steer

The author's father, Thomas Mozeley, was rector of Plymtree (1868-80), and for many years a leader writer to The Times and author of Reminiscences of Oriel College and the Oxford Movement. Woodbeer passed through a succession of families, including the Land family, from Domesday onwards. The present house (Woodbeer Court) is a medieval hall-house and was reconstructed internally at a later date to make more convenient rooms. The Land family, originally from Tiverton, held Woodbeare Court from the late 1500's, with pedigree taken by Vivian in his 1620 Visitation. John Land, Esq, gent was a significant benefactor in the late 1600's of Plympton parish. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.

An extensive pedigree for Land of Plymtree (1620-1773) is
an appendix to the paper , pp. 221-224.
