Will of George Sowthcombe, Gentleman of Rose Ash

In June 1595 George Southcomb, High Constable of Witheridge, "riding a colt to Witheridge Fair on Midsummer-day 1595, came where were two men fighting with swords, and being Constable of the Hundred, he rode up to them requiring peace. His colt, frightened with their swords, etc., threw him, and he dyed of the fall in a few hours, and was buried at Rose Ash June 27th 1595." George was carried back to his house at West Ford, where he made this will before dying

pr. 8 July 1595 P.C.C. (Scott 45) 2nd pr. 31 Jany 1603/4 by Lewis Southcombe, now of full age.

First I bequeath my Sowle into the handes of Almighty God, trusting to be saved by the death and passion of Jesus Christ: And my Body to be buried in the Church of Roseashe aforesaid. Item I give to the poore people of the same pish ten shillings

Item I will that my wyfe Jane shall have and enjoye during her lyfe all that my Tenement called Westford, and after her decease I give and bequeath the same Tenement with all his members and appertenancies unto Lewys Sowthcombe my Soone, for and during the tearme of the natural lyves of him the sayd Lewys, Margarett Sowthcombe and ffrances Sowthcombe my daughters, according to a lease made thereof unto me and mine Assignes for certaine yeares yet to com, determinable upon their lyves, of the demise and graunt of Richard Halse, and Arthur Halse, Esquires

If Lewys die unmarried, then Westford to his two daughters, Margarett & Frances, or the survivor of them.

Item I give and bequeathe unto Jane my wyfe two Kyne, twentie Ewe sheepe, and ten busshels of Rye.

To daughter Margaret £100, to daughter Frances £100, to daughter Katherine £60, to daughter Mary £60.

Residuary Legatee & Sole Exor A son Lewys

Item I doe ordaine and appoint my trustie and wellbeloved in Christ Robert Sowthcombe my brother, John Venner Clerk, and Henry Vicary my Rulers and overseers of this my sayd will to be accomplished and fulfilled, and I give to every of them for their pains talking Service ten shillings & I request my beloved friends Thomas Melhuishe Esquire, my brother Robert Sowthcombe, John Venner Clerk, and Henry Vicarie to have administration during my son's minority.
