James Thorne of Shebbear:

A Memoir Compiled from His Diary and his Letters by His Son

by

J. Thorne

London: Bible Christian Bookroom; Hamilton Adams & Co. (1873), illus, pp. , viii, 312.

Prepared by Michael Steer

James Thorne (1795-1872) was born at Shebbear. His parents John and Mary were enthusiastic supporters of William O'Bryan, founder of the Bible Christian Church, and it was at their home that a society was formed in which all the family was enrolled. On October 9th 1815 O'Bryan held a preaching service at Lake farm house, the home of John and Mary Thorne. 22 people, mainly the Thorne family, and probably all Anglican, were enrolled as class members. It was the formation of this society with so many strong Christians that led to Shebbear being seen as the birthplace of the Bible Christian denomination. This society became connected to other independent new societies, started by O'Bryan, as the Shebbear Circuit. Thorne became the first itinerant preacher of the Bible Christian Connexion and served with great success in the southwest and later in Kent, often preaching fifteen or sixteen sermons a week. His wife Catherine Reed was also a Bible Christian evangelist. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the University of Wisconsin Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust.
