The author provides a whimsical and entertaining eulogy on his eccentric friend Peter Orlando Hutchinson (1810-1897), a Victorian artist, based in Sidmouth. Hutchinson was born in Winchester but spent all his adult life in Sidmouth. His diaries are notable for their scientific content. His geological and archaeological observations are of immense value, but above all it is as an artist and ceaseless and devoted recorder of everything he heard and saw that he will be remembered, making his diaries a valuable source for Devon landscape studies. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
