This interesting book was a relatively early product of the Westcountry's rapidly developing 'seaside industry' and produced for visitors. The Bedford Hotel in Sidmouth, was formerly the Royal Marine Library and Reading Rooms of John Wallis, Bookseller by Appointment to the Duke and Duchess of Kent and a fashionable meeting place in its day. Wallis was publisher, bookseller and business associate of R Ackerman of Strand, London. Much knowledge of early 19th C. Sidmouth comes from Wallis's publications and topographical prints. The Library was badly damaged in the great storm of 22nd Nov 1824, the Wallis family only just escaping. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
