The paper presents Lay Subsidy records for Plymouth, East Stonehouse, Compton and Stoke Damerel (Devonport). Subsidy Rolls are taxation records made between the 12th and 17th centuries. The subsidy was imposed upon persons according to the reputed value of their estates, and was assessed against the laity ("common" people). This particular record is possibly part of the Great Subsidy of 1524-5 that lists all people over the age of 16 years with income from land or with taxable goods worth £2 per annum, or with annual wages of £1 or more. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
