"TWITCHEN, 6 miles N.E. by E. of South Molton, is a small village in a picturesque dell, encompassed by lofty hills, some of which have flourishing plantations. Its parish contains 194 souls, and 2918 acres of land, extending to the borders of Somersetshire, and including about 310 acres of common. Lord Poltimore is lord of the manor, and owns the great tithes and most of the soil, and the rest belongs chiefly to Sir R.G. Throckmorton, Bart. The perpetual curacy is annexed to the vicarage of North Molton. The Church (St. Peter,) is a small neat structure, which was rebuilt in 1844, at the cost of £400, except the tower, which contains three bells. The chancel window is enriched with stained glass, and the seats are all open." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

A parish in South Molton Hundred, the Archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and the Diocese of Exeter.
