By

John Bradford

London: Simkin Marshall & Co. Crews: Newton Abbot (1843). xii, 156pp.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The author appears to have been a native of North Devon, but settled at Newton Abbot about 1839. He was an Excise officer. Bradford held views a little in advance of his time, and was stigmatised as a freethinker. He dabbled in phrenology, had probably read Combe, and delivered lectures to the incipient 'Useful Knowledge Society' of Newton. Bradford wrote his book at Pavilion Place, a row of cottages between East Street and Hopkins Lane at Newton - a site that has long since disappeared. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the New York Public Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
