Newton Abbot College Magazine. No 1, May 1870
Oxford & London: James Parker & Co. 29pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Newton Abbot Grammar School, founded in 1904, has recently been renamed Newton Abbot College. Before 1904, there was in Wolborough, a suburb of the town, a small independent ('public') school named Newton Abbot Proprietary College, later renamed Newton Abbot College but not connected to the Grammar School. The school seems to have been reasonably successful with university entrance. Perhaps its best-known pupil was Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, and its most sensational graduate was Colonel Percival Harrison Fawcett (1867 - 1925) a British artillery officer, archaeologist and South American explorer. With his eldest son, Fawcett disappeared in 1925 during an expedition to find "Z" - his name for what he believed to be an ancient lost city in the uncharted jungles of Brazil. This rare and much sought-after publication was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
