                       ELIZABETHAN LIFE : DISORDER

This book, by Dr F G Emmison, is one of his series of five books on life
in Elizabethan Essex. This index, ESS16C5.TXT, is the fifth in my series
of indexes from these books. My four previous indexes in this series have
covered two of Dr Emmison's other books in the set and this index extends
the indexing to a total of three books.

Dr Emmison's introduction to this volume is well worth reading and I intend
to excerpt from it and to upload a file based on his comments. One point
is worth noting, sadly, here. He says "Many personal names are omitted,
to save space... The great majority of documents relating to persons or
parishes are of interest mainly to family historians and genealogists and
to parish historians. For them the Essex Record Office has compiled not
only full indices to the calendars of the criminal court records but also
what is probably the biggest index of personal names for any county."

In one sense that is great, but it also means that it is not readily
available for upload into the BBS system. Hence my indexes are only
a part of what could probably be an index of the majority of the population
 of Elizabethan Essex.

The book is full of information like "Two Braintree labourers drove away
two pigs ... Two High Roothing men cut down and stole ... A Dagenham
wheelwright stole ... " O for their names ! And Emmison specifically
excludes many names we would think most valuable .. "No mention is made of
the hundreds of ... indictments for larceny where the personal names are
those of humble people .." As you work through the book you are painfully
aware of all the missing names - if the victim is an important person he
is far more likely to be named. All too often we have a reference to
XYZ Gentleman and six other named men, or the like. This was intentional
but another two or three pages to the book would have allowed thousands
 more names to be included.
