“BROMLEY (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of TENDRING, county of ESSEX, 4½ miles (S. S. W.) from Manningtree, containing 693 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £16, 16. 0½., and in the patronage of Valentine Warren, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. George, is a handsome and regular edifice. Petty sessions for the division are held here once in five weeks, on Monday, alternately with Mistley, Manningtree, and Thorpe. This parish participates in the benefit of two scholarships at St. John's College, Cambridge, to be filled up out of twenty candidates from the school at Dedham, of which number, Great Bromley supplies four.” [From Samuel Lewis A Topographical Dictionary of England (1831) - copyright Mel Lockie 2016]
