"MIDDLETON, a parish in the hundred of HINCKFORD, county of ESSEX, 1 mile (S. by W.) from Sudbury, containing 109 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the jurisdiction of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently with the Consistorial Court or the Bishop of London, rated in the king's books at £8, and in the patronage of the Rev. Oliver Raymond, The church has some remains of Norman architecture. The parish is bounded on the east by the river Stour."
