ALVESTON, Gloucestershire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868
"ALVESTON, a parish in the upper and lower divisions of the hundred of Langley and Swinehead, in the county of Gloucester, 3 miles to the S. of Thornbury. It is situated within a short distance of the Cotswold hills. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, value £250, in the patronage of the dean and chapter. The church, which stands apart from the village, has a low tower, and contains some monumental brasses. Alveston House is the principal residence." "GROVESEND, a hamlet in the parish of Alveston, hundred of Swineshead, county Gloucester, 2 miles S.E. of Thornbury. Here are traces of an ancient fortified camp, and tumuli in which human remains were discovered in the last century. Lackington, bookseller, once lived here."
