AUST, Gloucestershire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"AUST, a chapelry in the parish of Henbury, and hundred of the same name, in the county of Gloucester, 3 miles to the W. of Thornbury, its post town. It is situated on a lofty cliff on the eastern bank of the river Severn, at the ferry called the "Old Passage", and the "Trajectus" of Roman times. The passage is made to Beachley at the mouth of the river Wye, and is two miles long. It was at this place that the interview of Edward I., with the Prince Llewellyn was held. The district is chiefly marshy, but has many points of interest for the geologist. The living is a perpetual curacy attached to the vicarage of Henbury."

"NEW PASSAGE, in the parish of Aust, on the river Severn, county Gloucester, about 3 miles S.E. of Chepstow."

"OLD PASSAGE, (or Aust Ferry), in the parish of Aust, on the river Severn, county Gloucester, 4 miles W. of Thornbury. It was the Trajectus of the Romans, and is now spanned by a railway bridge."
