"AVENING, a parish in the hundred of Longtree, in the county of Gloucester, 2 miles to the S. of Minchinhampton. Stroud is its post town. It contains the chapelry of Nailsworth, the hamlet of Aston, and several other hamlets. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester, in the patronage of the Hon. L. H. K. Harman, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is also a district church at Nailsworth, the living of which is a perpetual curacy, value £100, in the gift of trustees. There is an endowed school for six boys, with an income of £22, and some other charities. Previous to the suppression of alien priories, the manor of Avening was held by the Abbess of Caen in Normandy, who is conjectured to have erected the church. Gatcomb Park is the seat of the Ricardos, and has some Danish relics."
