BOURTON-ON-THE-HILL, Gloucestershire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"BOURTON-ON-THE-HILL, a parish in the upper divisions of the hundreds of Tewkesbury and Westminster, in the county of Gloucester, 4 miles to the S. of Chipping Campden. Moreton-in-the-Marsh is its post town. It is situated near the border of Warwickshire, in a hilly country, commanding much fine scenery. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, of the value with the perpetual curacy of Moreton annexed to it, of £675, in the patronage of Lord Redesdale. The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence. The National school has an endowment of £112 per annum. Bourton was the birthplace (1581) of Sir Thomas Overbury, who was imprisoned and poisoned in the Tower in the reign of James I., at the instigation of the favourite, Somerset."
