War Memorial - Cold Ashton, Gloucestershire

The Memorial is a Celtic Cross set on a tapering square granite plinth and stands in the churchyard near the south door of the Church of The Holy Trinity, Cold Ashton. It was supplied by the Bodmin Granite Co, Bodmin.

The inscription on the cross reads:-

The inscription on the plinth reads :-

Some notes on the Memorial Inscriptions

Captain Hugh Sayres served in the 1st Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers but was attached to the 2nd Bn when he died on Saturday 1 July 1916 aged 27 yrs. He is buried in SUCRERIE MILITARY CEMETERY, COLINCAMPS, Somme, France. He was the son of William Borrett Sayres and Ellen Harriet Sayres of 60 Longridge Rd. Earl's Court, London.

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Ward Fortescue Sayres served in the 2nd/1st Wessex Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps and died on Wednesday 10 October 1917 aged 50 yrs. He is buried in ABBEYVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. He was the youngest son of the Rev. Edward Sayres of Cold Ashton Rectory and husband of Bertha Sayres of 4 Marlborough Terrace, Bovey Tracey, Devon.

Gnr. Harold Sidney Hinton served in the Royal Field Artillery and died on Monday 28 October 1918 aged 21 yrs. He is buried in MARSHFIELD (ST MARY) CHURCHYARD. He was the son of Sidney J and Alice Hinton of West End Marshfield.

Second Lieutenant Ralph Neville Staight served in the 3rd Bn. Somerset Light Infantry, formerly 10th (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars and died on Saturday 24 March 1917 aged 26 yrs. He is buried in BEAURAINS ROAD CEMETERY, BEAURAINS, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Stephen Neville Staight and Margaret Staight of The Battlefields, Bath. He was wounded at Ypres 1915.

Private J W Purnell served in 203rd Coy Machine Gun Corps (Inf) and died on Monday 22 April 1918. He is buried in ROISEL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France.

Private Alfred Arthur Walker served in 1st/5th Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Monday 4 November 1918 aged 30 yrs. He is buried in LANDRECIES COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Nord, France. He was the husband of Amy F Walker of Cold Ashton.

Sergeant George Frederick Jesse Anstee was a pilot in 31 Sqdn. Royal Air Force and died on Friday 13 October 1944 aged 23 yrs. He is buried in MILAN WAR CEMETERY, Italy. He was the son of George and Alice Anstee of Doynton Glos.
