War Memorial - Dyrham, Gloucestershire

The Memorial stone cross stands on a triple octagonal plinth in the churchyard of St Peters Church, Dyrham.

The inscriptions are very faded and difficult to read.

The inscription on the East side of the plinth reads:-

TO
THE HONOURED
MEMORY
OF
THESE MEN OF
THIS PARISH
WHO
DIED IN THE
GREAT WAR
1914-1918

On the West side of the plinth the inscription reads:-

ALSO TO
THOSE MEN
WHO FELL
1939-1945
The names on the top plinth read:-

The names on the second plinth read:-

Some notes on the Memorial Inscriptions

I am indebted to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for much of the information appearing in these notes. The Commission's records do not always match the Memorial inscriptions in some minor details.

Private Christopher Ball served in the 12th Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Sunday 3 September 1916 aged 26 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. He was the son of George and Charlotte Ball of The Gardens, Dyrham.

Private Albert Shewring served in "C" Coy. 2nd Bn.Gloucestershire Regt and died on Monday 10 May 1915 aged 23 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West- Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Mrs E Shewring of 486 Whitehall Road St George, Bristol.

Private Charles Redwood served in 1st Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Thursday 29 October 1914 aged 21 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West- Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Charles and Mary Ann Redwood of Talbot Cottage, Dyrham.

Private G Shipton served in 1st/4th Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Sunday 9 April 1916. He is buried in HEBUTERNE MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Mrs a Shipton of 45 Kew Road, Clevedon.

Private William Tandy served in 12th Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Saturday 29 July 1916. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France.

Private Robert Arthur Fitzroy Shewring served in 7th Bn. Somerset Light Infantry and died on Wednesday 9 August 1944 aged 19 yrs. He is buried in ST.MANVIEU WAR CEMETERY, CHEUX, Calvados, France. He was the son of Arthur Fitzroy Shewring and Beatrice May Shewring of Dyrham.

Private J J Nash served in 12th Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Saturday 10 August 1918 aged 21 yrs. He is buried in AIRE COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Mrs L Nash of Station Road, Warmley.

Private Alfred William Andrews served in 10th Bn. Devonshire Regt. and died on Saturday 10 February 1917 aged 28 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the DOIRAN MEMORIAL, Greece. He was the son of Robert Wickham Andrews and Alice Clara Andrews of Dyrham.
