EYFORD, Gloucestershire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"EYFORD, a parish in the upper division of the hundred of Slaughter, county Gloucester, 3 miles S.W. of Stow-on-the-Wold, its post town, and 14 N.E. of Cheltenham. A tributary of the river Windrush passes through the parish. There is no church, the inhabitants attending the church of Upper Slaughter. Eyford Hall is the principal residence. It was formerly a seat of the dukes of Shrewsbury. In a summer-house in the garden, built over a cascade, but now pulled down, Milton is said to have written a part of "Paradise Lost"."
