[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]

"HILL, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of Berkeley, county Gloucester, 4 miles S. of Berkeley, its post town, and 6½ S. of the Berkeley Road railway station. The village, which is small and wholly agricultural, is situated on the river Severn, which is here more than 2 miles wide. The soil is chiefly a rich loam, producing abundant crops, and the pastures are luxuriantly rich. The eastern portion of the parish is undulating, but the western almost level.

The living is a donative curacy* in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, value £162. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is an ancient structure, with a small spired tower containing one bell. The interior is fitted up with open seats fronted with richly-carved oak. The parochial charities produce about £2 per annum. Herbert Jenner, Esq., is lord of the manor. Adjoining the church is the venerable mansion of Hill Court, supposed to have been originally a monastery founded in the 12th century."
