INTRODUCTION

So far as we know the monumental inscriptions in Nympsfield church and churchyard were last complied by Ralph Bigland, Garter Principal King of Arms, in his early 19C survey of churchyards throughout Gloucestershire. Any tombs listed here which were previously noted by Bigland have been marked with an asterisk (*). Surprisingly, perhaps, we found all but six of the tombs in the Bigland survey which, for completeness, is given at the end of the present list. We found one early tomb (No.125) which appears to have been missed by him. In several cases though the inscriptions on the 'Bigland tombs' were so worn that they could only be identified with difficulty and where this is stated the inscriptions quoted are those given by him. Copies of the complete Bigland survey (4 volumes) may be seen at the Gloucestershire Archives.

Abbreviations have been used extensively throughout the listing and these are explained towards the end of the document. The numbers Ch1 to Ch10 refer to monuments within the church; numbers 1 to 141 indicate those in the churchyard and are shown on the plan; numbers B1 to B26 are from the Bigland listing and are cross-referenced where their position is known.
