National Gazetteer (1868) - Dogmersfield

"DOGMERSFIELD, a parish in the middle half of the hundred of Odiham, in the county of Southampton, 2 miles N.E. of Odiham, and 2 S. of Winchfield, its railway station and post town. It is situated close to the Basingstoke canal, and was formerly a seat of the archbishops of Canterbury. The surface is undulating, and the soil varies from a light sand to a stiff clay. The village is small, and wholly agricultural. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Winchester, value £331, in the patronage of Lady Mildmay. The church, dedicated to All Saints, is a modern stone structure. There is a lake here which covers 44 acres. Here Prince Arthur, son of Henry VII., first met Catherine of Arragon on her arrival from Spain. The foundations of an ancient palace have been discovered. Dogmersfield Park contains paintings by Canaletti, Holbein, and other ancient masters."
