HURSLEY

"HURSLEY, a parish in the lower half of the hundred of Buddlesgate, county Hants, 4 miles S.W. of Winchester, its post town. The village stands on the high road from Winchester to Romsey. This parish formed part of the ancient manor of Merdon, and belonged to the Saxon kings and bishops of Winchester, but afterwards came into the hands of Richard Cromwell. It is the head of a Poor-law Union. It is identified as the Mrantune of the Saxon chronicles, where Cynewulph, king of Wessex, was assassinated by Ceynard, brother of Sigebert, the last king, of Wessex."
