"SHORWELL, a parish in the liberty of West Medina, Isle of Wight, county Hants, 5 miles S.W. of Newport, its post town. The village is chiefly agricultural. An Alpine bridge is constructed over the Newport road. The parish contains the tythings of North and South Shorwell, Atherfield, Gatcombe, and Kingston. The manor belonged to the priory of Carisbrooke, from which it was separated in the reign of Edward III., and made a distinct parish. The land, though partly consisting of downs, is fertile. A spring of pure water rises in the demesne of Northcourt, from which the parish takes its name." [Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) - Transcribed by Colin Hinson (c)2003]
You can also perform a more selective search for churches in the area that are recorded in the GENUKI church database. This will also help identify churches in nearby townships and/or parishes. You also have the option to see the location of the churches marked marked on a map.
If you keep this page loaded for a very long time and the database is updated since loading it, the church links above may become stale and may display the wrong church. If this happens, reloading this page will correct them.
Ask for the gazetteer for a calculation of the distance from Shorwell to another place.
