National Gazetteer (1868) - Whitwell

"WHITWELL, a parish in the liberty of East Medina, Isle of Wight, county Hants, 7 miles S.E. of Newport, and 3 W. of Ventnor. The parish includes the hamlets of Berry and Nettlecombe. It was anciently included in the manor of Gatcombe, and subsequently formed part of Calbourne. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Godshill and the rectory of Niton. The church, built and endowed by De Estur, lord of Gatcombe, contained the chapels of the Blessed Virgin and St. Rudegund. There is a school."
