BOCKLETON is a parish partly in this county, but principally in
Worcestershire, under which county full particulars are given. (See
"Littlebury's Directory and Gazetteer of Worcestershire", 1873, page 88.)
Hampton Charles, a hamlet in Herefordshire, will be found under a
separate head.
HAMPTON CHARLES is a hamlet on the N.E. border of this county,
but belonging to the parish of Bockleton, Worcestershire. It is distant 7
miles N.W. of Bromyard, 5½ S. of Tenbury, 8 E.N.E. of Leominster, and
20 N.N.E. of Hereford; is in Broxash hundred, Bromyard union, petty
sessional division, and county court district, and Docklow polling district.
The population in 1861 was 87; in 1871, 61; inhabited houses, 16;
families or separate occupiers, 16; area of hamlet, 492 acres; annual
rateable value, £563. Major R. Prescott Decie, who is lord of the
manor, and Mrs. Prescott, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay;
subsoil, sandstone; chief produce, wheat, hops, fruit, &c. The parish
of Bockleton (of which the Rev. Richard Mence is the vicar) is in the
diocese of Hereford, archdeaconry of Ludlow, and rural deanery of West
Burford. The church is distant about ¾ of a mile from Hampton Charles.
Bockleton Court, the seat of Major R. Prescott Decie, J.P., is in
Worcestershire. It is a fine modern mansion, commanding beautiful and
extensive views of a rich agricultural country. Bockleton Grove (of oaks)
lies high, and is a well-known landmark. The population of the whole parish
of Bockleton in 1871 was 365.
POSTAL REGULATIONS.- Letters arrive by messenger from Tenbury
about 10.30 a.m. Tenbury is the nearest money order and telegraph
office and post town.
