CRASSWELL, Herefordshire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"CRASSWELL, a township and chapelry in the parish of Clodock, hundred of Ewyas Lacy, in the county of Hereford, 5½ miles S.E. of Hay, and 7½ N.W. of Pontrilas station. It is situated on the river Munnow, near its source at the foot of the Black mountains. In the 12th century an alien priory was founded here, subordinate to Grandmont. It is separated into two divisions, called Upper and Lower Crasswell. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Hereford, value £47, in the patronage of the Vicar of Clodock. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a plain old structure. The charities amount to £1 per annum."
