GRAFTON is a township situated on the road leading from Hereford to Ross and Monmouth, nearly 3 miles S. of the city of Hereford; is in the civil parish of St. Martin, Hereford, but without the liberties of the city; in Webtree hundred, Hereford union, county court district, polling district, and petty sessional division. The population in 1861 was 93; in 1871, 81; inhabited houses, 15; families or separate occupiers, 15; area of township, 424 acres; annual rateable value, £1,383. Francis Richard Wegg-Prosser, Esq., of Belmont, is lord of the manor and principal landed proprietor. Captain Robert Henry De Winton and Mrs. Smith are also landowners here. The soil is stiff loam and clay, producing wheat, barley, beans, &c. There is a brickyard in the township. Grafton is in the diocese; archdeaconry, and rural deanery of Hereford. By Order in Council of the 19th of May, and duly registered in the registry of the diocese of Hereford 7th June 1866, the townships of Grafton and Lower Bullinghope were separated from the parish of St. Martin, Hereford, and annexed, for ecclesiastical purposes only, to the parish of Upper Bullinghope. Graftonbury, the property and residence of Captain Robert Henry De Winton, J.P., D.L., is pleasantly situated here.
