Knill, Herefordshire

KNILL.

KNILL is a parish, 23 miles north-west from Hereford, 4 from Kington, and 3½ from Presteign, in Wigmore hundred, Presteign union, rural deanery of Leominster, and Hereford archdeaconry and bishopric; it is situated on the borders of Radnorshire. The church of St. Michael is an old stone building, and has nave, chancel, and tower with wooden spire, and is the burial place of Sir Samuel Romilly. The living is a rectory, worth about £105 yearly, with 10 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Sir John Walsham, Bart.; the Rev. Francis Walsham, M.A., is the rector. The neighbourhood is very picturesque. The population in 1861 was 84; the acreage is 798. Sir John Walsham, Bart., is lord of the manor, and, with, the exception of 2 or 3 acres, owner of the parish, being the lineal descendent and heir of Sir John de Knill, Knt., lord of Knill in the 12^th century. Knill court, a handsome Elizabethan mansion, is at present tenanted by Sir John Walsh, Bart., M.P., and Lord-Lieutenant of Radnorshire.
