- Coleman, Delphine - Orcop. The S.P.A. Ltd (Hanley Swan, Worcs) 1992.
ISBN 1 85421 194 3
This book, subtitled 'The Story of a Herefordshire Village from Pre-history to Present Times'
is a thoroughly researched account of Orcop, from its beginnings nearby to an ancient
trackway from the Midlands into South Wales, through to its resurgence in the early 1990s
as a place for 'teleworking'. There is a good chapter on 'Charities and the Poor Law', which
provides hope for those looking for evidence of their ancestors in Settlement Certificates
and Removal Orders. Primary Sources of research include Deeds and documents of
local landowners, and the manuscript notes of the Rev. Norris Dredge, Vicar of Orcop,
1893 to 1909. There are plenty of plans and maps, and over 100 b&w photographs.
- Delphine Coleman, in her book Orcop [q.v. above], refers
to the Rev. Norris DREDGE as - "Curate of Christchurch, Preston, 1876-77;
Colne, Lancs, 1877; Ainsworth, Lancs 1877-1880. Chesterfield 1880-1888 (with
charge of Calow 1880-1884); Clay Cross, Derbyshire 1888-1893. Vicar of Orcop
1893-1909. Rector of Pettaugh, Suffolk, from 1909 until his death in 1919."
[Interesting to me as he was also in Chesterfield!]
