PIXLEY is a small parish intersected by the Ledbury and Hereford road, and within 1 mile of Ashperton station on the Worcester and Hereford railway; is distant 4 miles W.N.W. of Ledbury, 10½ E. of Hereford, and 10 N.N.E. of Ross; is in Radlow hundred, Ledbury union, petty sessional division, and county court district, and Much Marcle polling district. The population in 1861 was 110; in 1871, 96; inhabited houses, 18; families or separate occupiers, 26; area of parish, 637a. 1r. 30p.; annual rateable value, £972. The Right Hon. Earl Somers, of Eastnor castle, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is a stiff clay, producing wheat, beans, hops, fruit, and roots. Pixley is in the diocese and archdeaconry of Hereford and rural deanery of South Froome; living, a rectory; value, £120, with 50 acres of glebe; patron, Earl Somers; rector, Rev. William Pulling, M.A., late fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford, who was instituted in 1844, and is also rector of Eastnor, and a prebendary of Hereford cathedral. The Rev. George P. Turner, M.A., is the curate. The church is a small edifice, with about 100 sittings. The nave and chancel were restored and a bell-turret built in 1865, at the cost of Earl Somers and the Rev. W. Pulling. The church fittings and windows were offerings from various persons. The children from this parish attend the public elementary school at Ashperton.
